J2C

J2C Strengths

  • Provides state-of-the-art wavelet compression for high-end professional workflows (Digital Cinema)
  • Allows for highly efficient progressive decoding (by resolution or quality layer) natively within the stream
  • Supports lossless mathematical compression and high bit-depths (up to 16-bit per channel) natively
Limitations
  • Lacks a standard container to store color space info or metadata, requiring external systems (like MXF or DICOM) to map colors correctly
  • Extremely computationally expensive to encode and decode compared to standard DCT-based JPEG
  • Zero web browser support
MIX

MIX Strengths

  • Allowed early consumer software to non-destructively edit complex compositions involving photos, text, and vector clipart
  • Shared an architecture with other Microsoft Office products, enabling deep integration (OLE embedding) into Word and PowerPoint at the time
Limitations
  • Completely proprietary and undocumented, leading to a massive loss of historical data for users who archived their family photos in this project format
  • Requires traversing a complex OLE filesystem just to extract the flattened raster image
  • No support in modern image editors like Photoshop, GIMP, or web browsers

When to choose which format

J2C
Use J2C when…
  • Digital Cinema Packages (DCP)
  • Medical Imaging (DICOM Payloads)
  • Professional Broadcast and Archiving
  • Embedded Hardware Encoding
MIX
Use MIX when…
  • Historical Microsoft Picture It! Projects
  • Microsoft PhotoDraw 2000 Graphics
  • Early 2000s Consumer Digital Scrapbooking
