JPEG-XR Strengths

  • Native support for alpha transparency, which standard JPEG fundamentally lacks
  • Computational complexity for decoding/encoding is relatively low, making it hardware-friendly
Limitations

  • Progressive JPEGs (which this MIME type attempted to describe) provide excellent perceived loading speeds on slow connections by rendering a low-resolution preview first
