AVCS Strengths

  • Efficiently stores bursts of images or animations utilizing inter-frame compression
  • Leverages the highly compatible and widely hardware-accelerated AVC (H.264) codec
  • Robust HEIF container supports extensive metadata, alpha channels, and depth maps
Limitations
  • Zero native support in web browsers
  • Largely superseded in efficiency by newer sequence formats like HEICS (HEVC) or Animated AVIF (AV1)
  • Complicated container structure requires specialized parsing libraries

DECE-Graphic Strengths

  • Allowed the UltraViolet DRM ecosystem to easily distinguish structural UI/cover graphic assets from actual encrypted video tracks in a Common File Format container
Limitations
  • Completely obsolete since the 2019 shutdown of UltraViolet
  • Unnecessary abstraction, as the underlying files were just standard JPEGs or PNGs
  • Causes modern strict MIME-type validators to fail if they rely on the Content-Type header
