JPEG-XS
JPEG-XS Strengths
- Provides sub-millisecond encoding/decoding latency, essential for live production and gaming
- Extremely lightweight, requiring very little CPU, GPU, or FPGA memory to process
- Replaces uncompressed video links (like SDI or HDMI) over standard Ethernet networks with visually lossless quality
Limitations
- Compression ratios are typically much lower (between 2:1 and 10:1) compared to heavy codecs like HEVC or AV1
- Zero support in web browsers or standard consumer devices
- Primarily licensed to hardware manufacturers and professional software ecosystems
PTI
PTI Strengths
- Provided a registered MIME type namespace for a specific application's proprietary image format without conflicting with standard web types
Limitations
- Completely undocumented and unsupported in modern ecosystems
- Zero web browser compatibility
- Falls into the 'vanity' tree, making it irrelevant for standard cross-platform data exchange
When to choose which format
JPEG-XS
Use JPEG-XS when…
- Live Video Broadcasting (SMPTE ST 2110)
- Video over IP Networks
- Virtual Reality / Augmented Reality (VR/AR)
- Automotive & Drone Cameras
PTI
Use PTI when…
- Legacy Application Specific Workflows
- Proprietary Image Storage
