DXF
DXF Strengths
- Universally supported by almost every CAD program, 3D modeler, and vector graphics editor in existence
- ASCII structure is human-readable and can be parsed or generated programmatically with relative ease
- The de facto standard for sending 2D cutting paths to CNC routers, plasma cutters, and laser engravers
Limitations
- ASCII DXF files can be enormously large and inefficient compared to binary DWG files
- The format relies heavily on legacy AutoCAD data structures, making complex 3D entity parsing extremely difficult for third-party developers
- Lacks native web browser rendering capabilities
SVG
SVG Strengths
- Provides infinite resolution scalability, looking perfectly crisp on high-DPI (Retina) displays without increasing file size
- Extremely lightweight compared to raster formats for flat graphics, logos, and UI elements
- Can be manipulated dynamically via the browser's CSS and JavaScript engines (DOM integration)
Limitations
- Unsuitable for complex photographic images or photorealistic textures
- Poses critical security vulnerabilities (XSS and XML External Entity attacks) if user-uploaded SVGs are not heavily sanitized
- Rendering performance degrades significantly if the SVG contains tens of thousands of complex nodes or deeply nested paths
When to choose which format
DXF
Use DXF when…
- Cross-Platform CAD Data Exchange
- CNC Machining and Laser Cutting Paths
- PCB Design Outlines
- Architectural 2D Layouts
SVG
Use SVG when…
- Web Logos & UI Icons
- Responsive Web Design Elements
- Interactive Data Visualizations (D3.js)
- CSS and SMIL Web Animations
