DPX Strengths

  • Industry standard for transferring uncompressed, high-fidelity film and VFX data
  • Rich industry-specific metadata including timecode, keykode, and film stock information
  • Supports logarithmic color spaces (LogC, Cineon) to preserve the massive dynamic range of film negatives
Limitations
  • Massive file sizes (e.g., a single 4K 10-bit frame is ~50MB, resulting in ~1.2GB per second at 24fps)
  • Zero native support in web browsers or consumer OS image viewers
  • Requires heavy-duty, fast storage infrastructure (RAID/NVMe) to playback in real-time

DXF Strengths

  • Universally supported by almost every CAD program, 3D modeler, and vector graphics editor in existence
  • ASCII structure is human-readable and can be parsed or generated programmatically with relative ease
  • The de facto standard for sending 2D cutting paths to CNC routers, plasma cutters, and laser engravers
Limitations
  • ASCII DXF files can be enormously large and inefficient compared to binary DWG files
  • The format relies heavily on legacy AutoCAD data structures, making complex 3D entity parsing extremely difficult for third-party developers
  • Lacks native web browser rendering capabilities
