Corel-CMX
Corel-CMX Strengths
- Preserves rich vector attributes and layer groupings native to the Corel drawing engine better than standard WMF files
- Significantly smaller footprint than full CDR project files, making it excellent for early CD-ROM clip art distribution
- Maintains decent support in the open-source community thanks to libraries like libcdr
Limitations
- Proprietary format strictly tied to Corel's ecosystem, often causing compatibility issues with Adobe software
- Zero support in web browsers; must be converted to SVG for modern web usage
- Largely obsolete for modern workflows, superseded by PDF and SVG
KTX2
KTX2 Strengths
- Universal hardware compatibility: write once, transcode anywhere to the target GPU's preferred format (ASTC, BC7, PVRTC, etc.)
- Drastically reduces transmission size over networks thanks to Basis Universal and Zstandard supercompression
- Seamless integration with the glTF ecosystem for optimized 3D asset delivery
Limitations
- Requires WebAssembly (Wasm) decoders and JavaScript loaders for web viewing, increasing initial application payload slightly
- Encoding textures into high-quality Basis Universal UASTC can be computationally intensive and slow
- Zero support in traditional 2D image viewers or native OS previews
When to choose which format
Corel-CMX
Use Corel-CMX when…
